The Town Museum of Šibenik was founded on December 20th 1925 in occasion of celebrating the thousandth anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom, and nowadays it is located in the former duke's palace near St. Jacob's cathedral.

The duke's palace took part in the coastal defence system built up in the 13th/14th century. The adaptation of the duke's palace was finished in 1975, making the modern functioning of the museum possible.

The complete museum material is divided in several collections: archaeological department, cultural-historical department and department of the recent history. The museum achieved the most significant results in the field of scientific activities, exhibitions and publishing. Numerous archaeological sites near Šibenik and the waters of Šibenik have been researched, and over 300 exhibitions have been organized.

Besides this, numerous editions extremely valuable for illumination of the Šibenik's history have been issued in museum's organization.
