TOMB OF THE FAMILY OF IVAN MEŠTROVIĆ – THE CHURCH OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER

The church of the Most Holy Redeemer – the tomb of the family of Ivan Meštrović, well known Croatian sculptor, named also the Mausoleum of Meštrović, takes place in the village Otavice in the Šibenik's hinterland, where his parents' family house is located, too.

The basic idea and the concept of the building itself was given by Ivan Meštrović, who was at the same time the investor, and he came up with the building as the mixture of memorial, artistic and sacral. The construction works lasted from 1926 up to 1931, while the construction equipping continued up to 1937, but the chapel nowadays remains unfinished.

The church was built up using the local stone from the nearby mountain Svilaja. Due to the gift contract between Ivan Meštrović and the Republic of Croatia from the year 1952 the church of the Most Holy Redeemer – the family mausoleum of Ivan Meštrović became a part of the inheritance of Ivan Meštrović, together with objects in Zagreb and Split.

In the year 1967 it was protected by the Law on the cultural monuments protection as immobile monument of culture.
