ŠIBENIK’S THEATRE

The current Šibenik's theatre is the follower of the National Theatre founded on May 9th, 1945, having its own professional drama ensemble that functioned until 1964 and the operetta from 1946 until 1956. Since March 1st, 1966 also the Children's Festival in Šibenik, today's International Children's Festival, founded in 1958, became a part of the Šibenik's Theatre (which used to be called the Centre for Culture).

Today's Šibenik's Theatre in the town of Šibenik takes place in a splendid building constructed in 1870 representing today the second oldest theatre building in the whole Croatia. It was projected by a man from Trogir, engineer Josip Slade. It is the first and the only theatre building in Croatia whose construction wasn't financed by the state, but by 28 stakeholders – inhabitants of the town of Šibenik.

Especially valuable part of this magnificent building is the ceiling of the drama decorated in 1868 by the artist Antun Zuccaro from Trieste, with allegoric paintings of the famous inhabitants of Šibenik: Niccolo Tommaseo, Antun Vrančić, Faust Vrančić, Martin Kolunić Rota, Andrija Medulić and in the centre, a woman as the symbol of Dalmatia, leaned on the stone coat of arms with her arm.

After being damaged during the Homeland war the building was completely renovated and its today's capacity is 310 seating places.
