The place Biskupija is about 5 km far from the town of Knin, and it represents one of the most valuable Early Croatian archaeological sites in the Republic of Croatia. Biskupija used to be called "Five churches on Kosovo", the basis of which the archaeologists date to the period of the Croatian monarchs (from 9th to 11th century), and whose rests have been found on the Lopuška Glavica, Crkvine, Stupovi, Bukorovića podvornica and Sveta Trojica sites.
Since the 11th century the site has been called Biskupija, due to the fact that the church – the cathedral of St. Mary became the bishop's residence of all the Croatians.
The earliest known representation of Our Lady in the Croatian art has been found by archeologists in that same church on the part of the stone wall that divided the presbytery from the church nave. Today, on the foundations of the ancient Croatian church with the same name there is a memorial church built between 1937 and 1938 according to the sketch of the best-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
During the Homeland war the church was destroyed once more and now is waiting to be renovated again.
