DEVELOPMENT OF AGROTOURISM IN THE ŠIBENIK-KNIN REGION

Significant development of agrotourism in the Šibenik-Knin region takes us back in the period after the Homeland war, when returning to the tourism tradition of the Šibenik's region was intensified. The area that was occupied during the war and the one in its surroundings became the vital territory for developing agrotourism in the Šibenik-knin region in the post-war years. Agrotourism itself has no possibility to develop in the middle of nowhere, which means that nearby has to be the minimum of tourist attractions, so that a rural household may exist. This minimum of the tourist attractions in the Šibenik hinterland has been achieved long ago, especially by the proclamation of the Krka National Park in 1985. There are also historically important towns of Skradin and Knin, the mausoleum of Ivan Meštrović, a great individual of the Croatian art whose works are famous worldwide, cultural localities like Burnum, Bribirska glavica, and Roman cisterns in the Vodice's hinterland as well as the insular fortifications on the Kornati islands. With time agrotourism started to develop on the Šibenik islands as well, where new rural households have been opened. This made the agrotourism offer of the Šibenik-Knin region more diverse.

DIVERSITY OF THE RURAL HOUSEHOLDS IN THE ŠIBENIK AREA

The rural households as "Kalpić", "Rakić", "Kristijan" and many others offer the guests a family as union in private, as well as in the business life. The other households raised the importance of the agrotourism up for one level, as "Jurlinovi dvori", where the religion is also its important characteristic. "Etnoland Dalmati" includes the first Croatian museum of the Dalmatian tradition, which makes it a very important locality within the cultural tourism in the Šibenik area.

THE SPIRIT OF THE PAST TIMES OF THE ŠIBENIK'S HINTERLAND

By visiting one of the rural households in the Šibenik hinterland it is possible to experience the spirit of the past times, when women weaved on the weaving loom, a man was the master of the house, with plenty children all around, more than today, and yet everybody was happy, because they had everything what they needed for living.

THE TRADITIONAL CUISINE

One of the features of such visits is surely the traditional food of the Šibenik hinterland. The taste and smell of the domestic brandy called rakija – grape brandy, plum brandy or fruit brandy made with aromatic herbs, together with the dried figs of the Šibenik's area as aperitif, "peka" – meat with potatoes prepared in a traditional way, and at the end everything spiced with the traditional sweets of the Šibenik area – fritule and kroštule.

RELAXATION FOR BODY AND SOUL

To all those enthusiastic for fresh air, untouched nature and vacation far away from the city and tourist centres, some rural households offer private accommodation also, trying to make your vacation more pleasant and enriched.
